South Tufa One of the largest tufa groves, South Tufa is alive with gulls, swallows, and phalaropes swimming and flying around, feeding on flies and brine shrimp. A self guided tour takes you among the towers at your leisure. Guided tours are available during the summer at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6 p.m. daily. South Tufa is a Federal Fee Area; adults are $3, children under 18 are free. Golden Eagle and Golden Age passes are valid here. Bring lots of drinking water. The nearest services, gas, food, lodging, are 11 miles away in Lee Vining.
